Week 1 - Team work & Wiki eLab
This week's eLab focused on two topics.
The first was how to work in a team effectively. This was particularly useful as we had just been assigned teams for our group project of solving a real world information problem through an android app/web mashup. The E-Tutorial focused on a list of the top ten ways to improve teamwork. They were as follows;
10. Don't choose people like you - Hopefully we all have different strengths and personalities and don't clash (too much)!
9. Choose a space - A physical space for group meetings and a virtual space like a whatsapp group chat to communicate.
8. Establish ground rules - Ensuring punctuality at meetings and there's a fair delegation of duties.
7. Make a to-do list - To make sure you don't forget to do anything important!
6. Build a timeline - Schedule when each group task has to be completed by.
5. Assign roles and responsibilities - to ensure equal co-operation from all members.
4. Communication matters - weekly group meetings and interactions on social media are important.
3. It's not a competition - it's a group effort, not an effort of one or two dominant members.
2. Check in with your instructor - Your instructor is there to help with whatever aspect of your project if needs be.
1. Have fun - Fairly self explanatory!
The second aspect was based on how to create a wiki on Blackboard. We post what we learnt after every lecture on a Blackboard Wiki.
Wikipedia is the largest and widely known database of online Wiki's. But aside from Wikipedia, Wikis are prominent across the World Wide Web in websites such as 'Wikispaces' and 'Wikia'. There was an instructional video on how to post in a Wiki on Blackboard and a small quiz at the end to test our knowledge on the world of Wiki's.
